The Incredible Origins of the Onyx Sun follows the extraterrestrial adventures of Zack Goodspeed, who discovers his grandfather has secretly invented a source of unlimited power called the Onyx Sun and used it to fuel a spaceship. Zack stows away on the ship and is thrust into a journey that strands him on the Moon, throws him in league with bold new friends, and pits him against an enemy bent on using the Onyx Sun to wipe out all life on Earth. In the process, Zack is introduced to robots as tall as skyscrapers, Memo Files that help him learn new subjects instantly, and airships that zip him around the lunar surface in minutes. Every minute counts as Zack and his friends struggle to save the crew and the future of humanity...

The Incredible Origins of the Onyx Sun is designed to engage kids in technology and foster a love of math and science (and reading) during their early years. Especially in the U.S., children are less engaged in these subjects than ever before and are falling behind their international peers, which is deeply troubling to today’s educators and parents. In an increasingly competitive global workforce, our children’s love of math and science could make the difference in their lives and could serve the betterment of everyone. The author learned of this trend while working for Houghton Mifflin/Riverdeep and talking to hundreds of parents and teachers as a senior product manager for the acclaimed Edmark House Series, Destination Math, and Destination Science products. Although Christopher has now moved on to working for the popular virtual world Second Life, what he experienced at Houghton Mifflin has driven him to make the Onyx Sun series of books a reality.

Sally Ride’s famous quote, “Our future lies with today's kids and tomorrow's space exploration” is quickly becoming reality as technology plays a more prominent role in all our lives and while projects like Virgin Galactic and the Mission to Mars make space more accessible. If the current trend continues, our children will become even less passionate about math and science and will be even less prepared for the inevitable future. Books like The Incredible Origins of the Onyx Sun could encourage kids’ passion in the subject areas that will increasingly hold sway over their lives and ready them for a future of adventure and success.
